Lecture: Food for Thought - Planetary Boundaries and the Need for Agri-Food System Transformation
Global agri-food systems provide us with essential food while securing jobs and livelihoods for over a billion people. But at the same time, the way we produce and consume our food exert significant adverse effects, including environmental degradation, climate change and an increasing disease burden due to unhealthy diets. To realise the ambition of producing sufficient healthy and nutritious food within planetary boundaries, we must rethink and redesign our agri-food systems. This lecture aims to give an overview of these challenges and discuss ways to enable the transformation.

Global agri-food systems provide us with essential food while securing jobs and livelihoods for over a billion people. But at the same time, the way we produce and consume our food exert significant adverse effects, including environmental degradation, climate change and an increasing disease burden due to unhealthy diets. In order to realise the ambition of producing sufficient healthy and nutritious food within planetary boundaries, we must fundamentally rethink and redesign our agri-food systems.
This lecture aims to give an overview of agro-food system challenges and discuss ways to enable the needed transformation. Katherine Richardson will be focusing on the environmental externalities of food production using the planetary boundaries framework. Tim Benton will give an overview of food system challenges, the policy landscape, and how to enable the transformation.
