    Talks at the Square: Zach Serber

    On 7 May 2019, Dr. Zach Serber, Co-Founder, Chief Science Officer and VP of development of San Francisco based Zymergen, will visit BioInnovation Institute to give a talk at the popular event series ‘Talks on the Square’. At the event, Dr. Serber will talk about how Zymergen is unlocking the power of biology through technology and share their key learnings from the six-year journey from being a small-team start-up to raising 575M dollars and becoming a plus 700-person company. Dr. Serber is a scientist and entrepreneur devoted to using bioengineering to drive the next industrial revolution. In 2013, Dr. Serber co-founded Zymergen, a technology company unlocking the power of biology by combining biology with robotics and machine learning. Today, he is the company’s Chief Science Officer and Vice President of Development overseeing scientific direction, new products, and development teams.

    About Dr. Zach Serber

    Zach is responsible for Zymergen overall scientific direction. Prior to founding Zymergen, he was the Director of Biology at Amyris. He has served as Principal Investigator on multiple DARPA contracts developing advanced tools for bioengineering and rapid prototyping novel biomolecules to generate innovative polymers and materials. Zach has 17 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Cell, Science and JACS, seven issued patents, and worked as a research fellow at Stanford University Medical School. He has a PhD in biophysics from UCSF, an MSc in neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh and a BA from Columbia University.

    ‘Talks on the Square’ is an event series by BioInnovation Institute (BII) with a key focus on spreading ideas and knowledge in life science entrepreneurship to inspire researchers to bring science out of the lab and into the economy. The events feature high-level international speakers with topics that emphasize innovations and inspirational topics within biotech, medtech and pharma.
